Day of the Dead Trees - Mountain Pine Beetle Workshop in Dory Lakes
527 West Dory Way, Black Hawk, CO 80422
Participants will view a ponderosa pine that has recently been hit by mountain pine beetles. Learn the signs of mountain pine beetle infestation in trees, and what to do if trees are infected. What are the signs of healthy verses unhealthy trees? We will also review some easy pine tree identification tricks. Mountain pine beetles are native to our forests. What’s the big picture and what can we expect for fire risk and forest health in the future? Bring your questions and dress for the weather. We will be outside. Speakers include Kelby Woodard, Forest & Mitigation Program Manager with Clear Creek Watershed & Forest Health Partnership and Jennifer Cook, Gilpin CSU Extension Educator.

Around 1 pm, we will hear from candidates for Gilpin County Commissioner. Then, we invite everyone to participate in our barbecue. Hot dogs and hamburgers will be provided - please bring a side or dessert to share.
All Dory Lakes residents are welcome. Only property owners current on annual dues will be able to vote during the meeting (one vote per property owner).
We will not host an early voting form this year as we have not received any outside interest in running for the board. Dory Lakes Slash Event
This year Dory Lakes is hiring Timberline Fire to chip all branches that residents stage beside the roads within the Dory Lakes development. This will occur from June 24 through June 28. Timberline will start from Highway 119 and work the north area first (north of the drainage and the park). Timberline will only work through our development once – So, all branches must be beside the road by June 24.
Timberline will chip branches and spray the chips onto the owner’s property – the dispersed chips will quickly decompose becoming forest soil – anyone who wishes Timberline to pile their chips in one place so the owner can use them as mulch can work with Timberline as they move through the neighborhood.
This effort is funded by the Dory Lakes POA annual dues and is only available to those property owners who have paid their 2024 dues.
Timberline has several requirements:
No branches/trees bigger than 10” in diameter
No stumps
Piles of branches should be no higher than 3’ to 4’ high (multiple piles are fine)
Place the largest end of the branches toward the road so the workers can easily process them.
This effort is totally voluntary for Dory Lakes residents and will help reduce wildfire fuels within the community – Any questions, please contact Dave Sprowls at dsprowls10@gmail.com.
